similar communiqué. If the communique were satisfactory, His Excellency undertook that lir. Hu's call should be

returned by Mr. Hallifax by a call on General Li Chai-sum

next week.

His Excellency made it clear that, in order to establish

friendly relations, there must be some outward and visible

sign on the part of Canton that its Government desired friendly relations to be re-established and stated that the

best evidence of this would be for General Li Chai-sum to

pay a formal call in Hong Kong on the Governor, which the Governor would be prepared thereafter to return in Canton.

The conversations were entirely friendly throughout.
